All You Need To Know About Your First Brazilian Wax

For those of you who have been living under a rock and don't know what a Brazilian Wax is. It is essentially getting all your pubes ripped off and going back to how you used to look pre-pubescent via waxing. Now, doesn't that sound intriguing?!

This isn't my first time getting it done, I first did it when I was 16 and have always been going back and forth the salon when I feel like I need grooming. I've even had a Brazilian IPL (Intense Pule Light) done before but we'll leave that for another post.

I've been asked a couple of times by girls who want to know what the experience is like and what they should do to prepare etc. So, here it is! A couple of questions answered so you can finally decide if you should pick up that phone and book an appointment for it.

1. Does it hurt?

Yes, it does. I'm not going to sugarcoat the experience so I want you to be mentally prepared. Also, bear in mind that the degree of pain is different for each person based on the experience itself and your sensitivity. For me, it was bearable and all I did was shrug it off after every pull. Do keep in mind that if you're used to shaving, it's going to hurt more when you get a wax. Shaving cuts off the hair but doesn't completely remove the roots. So when it grows back, it gets thicker and sometimes, more than one strand grows from the same root.

PRO TIP: Go for your appointment with an open mind and do your best to stay calm. The more you tense up, the more pain you're in for. I usually come in calm and cool, follow instructions and use my phone throughout the wax so I'm not just staring at the ceiling waiting to be ripped.

2. Is it awkward?

It's only awkward if you let it be. The professionals handling you have seen way more kitties than you have in a lifetime so don't sweat it and overthink. To get you mentally prepared, these professionals are really going to get in there to rip all your hair out with a bright light shining over your kitty. You will feel shy for a bit when you have to hop onto the table and show her your bits but don't sweat too much about it. The professional's usually trained to lighten the mood as well so you don't feel tensed baring it all to a stranger.

3. How is the process like?

Well, usually from top to bottom and of course, it gets a tad bit more painful near the centre but just hang in there girl! Also, news flash! Everyone has hair near and on their butthole so don't be alarmed and don't you dare scoff while reading this hun.

4. Does hair length matter?

You hair length should always be at least a 1/4 inch long for the wax to have hair to grasp on. The shorter your hair, the more it'll hurt so always make an appointment when you know it's long enough and about to get out of hand. It's not wise to make an appointment if you just shaved or trimmed a while back and it's still short. They'll most definitely have to send you home and get you to come back 2 weeks later.

5. How will I look and feel like after?

I'm not sure about you but I love how I look after a wax. If you stand butt naked and check yourself out, you look like a smooth naked mole rat. Honestly, I love that look. However, moments or even after a day from your wax, you might get some bumps due to the pain you went through. Your skin is still recovering so don't sweat about it. You're not in anyway dying.

6. Do I need aftercare?

Aftercare is important. For starters, shower with cold or lukewarm water for the first 24 hours as your pores are still open and exposed. Also, for extra TLC make sure you moisturise with unscented lotion every morning and night + exfoliate weekly. And sadly, no getting down and dirty with bae for at least the first 2 days. That's to avoid added swelling, rash, redness and worst of all an infection from all the friction.
