The Best Of Malaysian-Chinese Food

It’s been nearly a year since I was home in Malaysia and one thing’s for sure, I missed the food I grew up with. I recently came home for the summer and had a special someone flew back with me. We had such an amazing time together and I knew prior to that I had to bring him to all of my favourite eateries before he went back home to England. After all, Malaysia is a melting pot of culture that prides itself on amazing food like no other.

On my 13-hour long flight home I made a list on my phone. Without further ado, these are arguably the best Malaysian-Chinese eats I grew up with and love to date that you MUST TRY!

1. Beef Noodles @ Shin Kee Beef Noodle Specialist

My mom found this little piece of heaven while she was roaming around the city centre and I’m forever grateful. The beef noodle from Shin Kee is hearty and has a distinct aroma to it that I’ve yet to find in any other beef noodles in town. Hands down my favourite and if I could have it everyday I honestly would.

2. Chili Pan Mee @ Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee

This is my favourite dish to have whilst having a hangover because it seems to be the only dish I can finish at that devastating point of fatigue and major dehydration after a night out. Aside from the flavour, I really like the texture of the noodles and let’s not forget that special homemade chilli they have for you to keep adding as you go.

3. Hokkien Mee @ Ahwa Hokkien Mee

My dad loves the Hokkien Mee from this store and would never fail to surprise my family with some for supper when I was a kid. It’s insanely delicious fresh off the wok and I’m amazed at how something so simple can be this good. The massive charcoal fuelled fire used to give this dish “wok hei” (direct translation: wok breath) really gives it an unforgettable smoky taste and smell alongside the marinate they use.

4. Fried Fish Head Noodles @ Kaki Bola X.O. Fried Fish Head Noodles

Fish has never been my number one choice of meat because of the distinct smell it has. However, as I grew older I found restaurants and recipes that I could work with to enjoy fish. One of my many finds include this restaurant that does an amazing Fried Fish Head Noodle. I can’t stress enough how tasty the tomato broth is paired with springy rice noodles and a crunchy fish head.

5. Char Kuey Teow @ OO White Coffee Cafe

My grandparents are from Penang and I’ve always enjoyed the food there. One of my many favourites growing up include Char Kuey Teow, a flat rice noodle fried with seafood and egg over a massive fire in a wok. This greasy goodness is the ultimate comfort food for me and I recently stumbled upon this place in Penang that really satisfied my craving so I had to share!

Address: 262-264, Lebuh Carnarvon, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

6. Mee Pok @ Tang Pin Kitchen

I’m not very sure where Mee Pok came from but it’s been a blessing for sure. This simple dish hits the spot every time and to be honest, I’ve not seen any other restaurants doing this dish at all. This place doesn’t just do a delicious Mee Pok, you ought to try their dumplings and fishballs/cakes as well!

Address: 24, Jalan SS 2/24, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia

7. Assam Laksa @ Pasar Air Itam Laksa

If you know me, you’d know how much I enjoy a good Assam Laksa. Growing up I was never a fan of spicy delicacies but ever since I moved to England, it really hit me that I needed more excitement in my food. I’d say I started to fall in love with this dish a few years prior and have been on a hunt for one that hits the spot. Thankfully on my trip to Penang I found it and had seconds with no regrets.
